How to know if you're Ready to Apply for Jobs

Talking about tech in general, there are lots of resources available on the internet to help you become a Software developer, UI/UX Designer, and so on. The goal of using these resources is to actually make you ready to start working in the industry as soon as possible. But, how do you know you’re ready to apply for Jobs?

Learning a programming language is awesome and watching a 10hour youtube course is also cool, but these things are not how we actually measure if you are job ready or not. In this article, I’ll show you how to know if you’re job ready or not.

How to know if you're Job Ready

To know if you’re job ready, you should first ask yourself the following questions, the answers will determine if you’re job ready or not.

1. Can you build a project without a step-by-step tutorial?

Tutorial.png It’s easy for you to build anything when following a youtube tutorial or an udemy course, you are guided by the instructor and all you have to do is follow along. This is not the same as someone else who built something on his/her own.

Am not saying you shouldn’t Google stuff or do some research when building a project, that’s perfectly normal. What am saying is that you should be able to exhibit some level of confidence when building projects on your own.

2. Do you have the in-demand skillset?

Let’s say you’re a developer and you have experience writing HTML, CSS, and PHP. It’s not bad but, this is not what recruiters are looking for. You have to know what recruiters are looking for and then update your skillset. Learn Something like React, Typescript, and tools are currently in demand. These depend on your field tho.

3. Are you applying because of pressure?

So you’ve been learning Javascript for three months now and you felt because you watched a YouTuber that said you can become a Javascript developer in three months and earn six figures, you decided to start applying for Jobs. That’s a NO NO!

Am not saying this isn’t possible, we all have different timelines. But, there is a high probability that during this three-month period you won’t have built enough projects to solidify your confidence and experience. Take your time and build a solid foundation, it might take a while but it would be worth it.

4. Do you fill 50% of the job description?

Most of the job opportunities you'll come across won't be 100% your fit, but this doesn’t stop you from applying. If you fill at least 50% of the job description Apply.

Even if there are new technologies you have to learn Apply if you've built a solid foundation with similar technologies beforehand transitioning won't be difficult. As a matter of fact, you have nothing to lose, the worst thing that could happen would be a rejection email or you actually getting the Job.
